The stage trip from Tombstone to Bisbee was a grueling and dangerous five-and-a-half-hour trip. On January 6, 1882, the stage included W.S. Waite as driver and Charles Bartholomew as messenger, along with one female and two male passengers. The stage ran into trouble after leaving Charleston and was pursued by five men on horseback. At Hereford, the messenger acquired a Winchester rifle, to be used with his shotgun in case there was more trouble. Then, eight miles from Bisbee, three men began firing at the stage, wounding a horse and hitting the coach. After a few miles, the stage was forced to stop because of the wounded horse. Bartholomew kept firing, keeping the bandits at a distance, but the stage was surrounded. The thieves told a Mexican wood hauler to tell the stage men that, if they did not hand over the Wells Fargo box, everyone would be killed. Passengers convinced the messenger to surrender. The robbers ransacked the Wells Fargo box and took $6,500, gold and silver coins, the mine payroll, and a horse.
